CN Rail Hub in Milton Moves Forward After Federal Court of Appeal Decision.

Updated: Nov 7

The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed a challenge against building a large rail-and-truck hub in Milton, allowing the project to proceed. In a unanimous ruling, the three-judge panel found that the federal government's approval of the Canadian National Railway (CN) project, despite some environmental concerns, was reasonable.

The $250-million project aims to double CN’s tracks in Milton and create a hub where containers will be transferred between trucks and trains. Earlier this year, a lower court overturned the government’s approval due to health concerns, specifically about air quality from the 800 diesel trucks that will use the hub daily. However, the appeal court ruled that the government considered public health before approving the project, in accordance with environmental laws.

Local residents and politicians have opposed the hub for over 10 years, citing worries about increased pollution, noise, traffic, and the impact on community health. The hub is expected to operate 24/7, leading to more truck and train traffic in the area. Stacey Newman, from the group "Milton Says No," expressed disappointment with the court's decision but vowed to continue fighting CN's plans.

CN has stated that the hub is vital for Canada’s supply chain, helping businesses and consumers across the country. Halton Region has already spent $25 million in legal efforts to stop the hub, which will be built on 400 acres of CN-owned land in southwest Milton, near Tremaine Road, Britannia Road, Lower Base Line, and Highway 25.
