Dark Nights and Winter Hazards: Milton Police Provide Crucial Winter Safety Tips

MILTON—After a teenager found a stranger in her car one night, the Milton Police Department is reminding everyone to secure their homes and cars during the winter months.

With longer nights and early sunsets, police encourage people to take steps to keep their property safe and stay secure.

Tips for Home and Vehicle Safety Corporal Jareco Coulombe of the Milton Police shared that winter often sees more cases of car break-ins, package thefts, and scams. He advised simple actions like locking doors, clearing driveways for emergency access, and using motion-sensor lights to deter intruders.

“Lock your doors and turn on floodlights if you have them. Motion-sensor lights are great for scaring off anyone sneaking around,” Coulombe said.

The police suggest using video doorbells or security cameras to keep an eye on your property. They also recommend keeping valuables out of sight and reporting anything suspicious to their 24-hour dispatch line at 802-893-2424.

Driving and Car Safety in Winter Winter also brings driving risks. Coulombe advised using snow tires, driving slowly, and clearing snow from vehicles to prevent accidents.

For parents, he highlighted the importance of removing bulky winter coats before buckling kids into car seats. He explained that a snug fit works like a safety net during a crash, helping to protect against injuries.

Be Ready for Emergencies Coulombe recommended preparing a car emergency kit with essentials like a first aid kit, hand warmers, a shovel, flashlight, blankets, and sand for icy spots.

Milton’s parking ban, which prevents overnight street parking, ensures snow removal and emergency access. Coulombe noted that keeping driveways and walkways clear can save precious time during emergencies.

Helping Vulnerable Residents The police are also working with the Howard Center Outreach Team to assist those struggling with homelessness, food shortages, or housing issues. The team connects people with shelters, food, and other resources.

“If you or someone you know needs help, the Howard Center Outreach Team is there to provide support,” Coulombe said. Residents can also call Vermont’s 2-1-1 hotline for real-time help with shelters and housing options.

Stay Safe This Winter As the holiday season approaches, the police remind everyone to secure package deliveries and watch out for scams. Small steps like motion-sensor lighting and keeping your driveway clear can make a big difference.

The Milton Police Department urges everyone to stay prepared, stay safe, and report anything unusual this winter.
