The Milton Historical Society is getting into the Halloween spirit to both educate and entertain the community with its monthly speaker series.
"Spirits Among Us," a presentation by local history lecturer John McDonald, will explore spooky topics connected to Halloween. While local ghosts will be part of the talk on Oct. 17, McDonald will also cover the history of funeral practices, the origins of Halloween, and stories of haunted spots in Milton.
"People have always been fascinated with the afterlife and communicating with the dead," said McDonald. He promises a fun evening where attendees can share their own stories in the Halloween spirit.
One amusing example McDonald shared was about a meeting of British literary figures in 1816, where writers like Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein), Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Polidori (who inspired Dracula) told spooky stories to scare each other.
McDonald also enjoys discussing how horror plays a big role in entertainment, culture, and the arts. The lecture will include chilling tales from Milton's past, including haunted locations and old town mysteries, such as the current Town Hall, which was once a jail and the site of public hangings.
The lecture will take place in the Carriage Room of the Waldie Blacksmith Shop at 7:30 p.m. The society is also hosting a fundraising dinner at the Grand Chalet on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. "Spirits Among Us" is free, but tickets for the dinner are $90, with sales closing on Oct. 15
