"Ensuring Every Child Feels Included: Accessible Trick-or-Treating Arrives in Milton"

Halloween is a fun time for many kids, but it can be difficult for some. On October 27, Kincardine Terrace in Milton will host an accessible trick-or-treat event. Houses will set up treat stations, often on driveways, to make it easier for children with disabilities and special needs to enjoy Halloween.

Traditional trick-or-treating can be tough for kids with mobility issues due to steps and uneven paths. This event, held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., avoids flashing lights and darkness, which can be overwhelming for some children.

Megan Walker, founder of Wee Care Pediatric Home Health Care Inc., started the event to give all children a chance to enjoy trick-or-treating.

“We’re offering trick-or-treating during the day at accessible stations,” Walker said. They also provide sensory bags instead of just candy, for kids who have feeding or swallowing issues.

Walker was surprised to find no similar event in Milton and, after positive feedback from neighbors, hopes to grow it in the future. “You want every child to feel included, especially during holidays like Halloween. This way, they know the community supports them,” she added.

The idea of accessible trick-or-treating has been growing. In 2017, the Padulo family in Burlington started "Treat Accessibly" to make Halloween fun for everyone, after their daughter Siena noticed a boy in a wheelchair couldn’t reach their door. Today, many homes across Canada host accessible Halloween events.

"Halloween is such a big part of being a child — especially the chocolates. Now, it feels like there's nothing you can't do in Canada," said Siena Padulo.

Today, there are hundreds of thousands of homes in communities all over the country holding accessible Halloween events.
