Many children in Milton face various challenges that limit their daily activities, but one local woman is working to change that.
Megan Walker, who runs Wee Care Pediatric Home Health Care and has met many special-needs kids and their families, is focusing on making Halloween fun and accessible for everyone. She’s joined the Treat Accessibly movement, which started in 2017, to offer a curb-side trick-or-treating experience for children of all abilities.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m., Kincardine Terrace (near Savoline Blvd. and Main Street) will become a safe and welcoming place for an accessible Halloween event. Walker, along with neighbors and volunteers, will make sure all kids, including those with mobility or other special needs, can enjoy the fun. She’s encouraging everyone, not just special-needs kids, to come and join in the festivities.
"We want typical kids to come, too, to show that events for kids with special needs are normal. We’re trying to break the stigma," said Walker.
One of the excited participants is 10-year-old Sophia Kovic, who has a rare condition called Smith-Lemli-Opitz and faces physical and communication challenges. Her family is thrilled about the event because trick-or-treating has always been a bit difficult for Sophia. Her dad, Boyan, said, "It’s wonderful, especially with so many kids having special needs."
In the spirit of inclusion, Walker has planned for kids who may have feeding tubes or can’t eat candy. Alongside sweets, there will be balloons, small toys, and scented stickers to make sure no child leaves empty-handed.
Walker encourages Milton residents to visit the Treat Accessibly website and follow their guidelines to make their homes more accessible for trick-or-treaters. The event will also feature a visit from local firefighters with their fire truck to add to the excitement.
While it's hard to predict how many kids will attend, Walker hopes for a big turnout and envisions future collaborations with events like Milton DBIA’s Tiny Tots Trick or Treat.
Anyone who wants to help can bring treats to Kincardine Terrace on Oct. 27 or set up their own trick-or-treat station.
