An otherwise routine late-night cleaning shift turned into an unintentional yet effective crime deterrent at a rural gas station in Milton last Friday night (Dec. 27).
Around 10:30 p.m., four suspects attempted to break into the Petro Canada located at 10779 Guelph Line, according to Halton Police media relations officer Jeff Dillon. The suspects, all dressed in dark clothing and wearing face coverings, were spotted trying to force their way into the closed establishment.
Their plan was abruptly interrupted when they noticed an employee inside, diligently cleaning the premises. Caught off guard by the unexpected presence, the suspects quickly fled the scene in a dark-coloured van, abandoning their efforts to gain entry into the store.
The employee, who was unharmed, promptly reported the incident to authorities. Police are now reviewing security footage from the station and surrounding areas in hopes of identifying the suspects.
“This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and the role employees play in crime prevention,” said Dillon. “The presence of staff likely prevented a significant loss.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and Halton Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle involved to contact them or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
No further details have been released at this time.
