Mayor to Participate in Milton Santa Claus Parade Despite CN Sponsorship

Updated: Nov 6

Mayor Gord Krantz plans to participate in

the upcoming Milton Santa Claus Parade, even though CN's sponsorship has stirred concerns. Krantz expressed his reservations, stating, "I do not support CN or their proposed intermodal project in south Milton, but I’ve been involved in the Milton Santa Claus Parade since its beginning. I’ll be participating this year despite CN's sponsorship."

He also urged the parade committee to more carefully consider future sponsors, emphasizing his hope for a more cautious approach going forward.

The Town of Milton has similarly adopted a reserved stance regarding CN's involvement. A Town spokesperson remarked, "The Town generally does not support events with CN involvement, as we, along with Halton municipalities, believe CN's proposed truck/rail hub is dangerously located, posing risks to community safety and health." Nonetheless, the Town will continue to provide logistical support, such as street closures and cleanup, as it would for any approved event. Last year, the Town granted the parade committee $7,384 from the Milton Community Fund for safety vests, float maintenance, and safety improvements. However, Town staff will not volunteer at the event this year.

Milton Says No, a grassroots group opposing the intermodal terminal, announced that their bid to become a co-title sponsor of the parade was rejected. In a social media post, the group stated, "We are not allowed to donate to or participate in the parade. This is disappointing and wrong; the parade has chosen to promote CN over the well-being of our town and the health and safety of our citizens." Despite this setback, the group emphasized that they will not disrupt the parade, as they recognize it is a cherished event for local families.

The parade committee previously clarified that they have a policy against any political affiliations, campaigning, or displays during the event.
