Emma Feschuk loves learning about history, especially the role women played in World War II and the fight for women’s rights before and after the war.
The 15-year-old finds inspiration in the past and takes action in the present. She volunteers with organizations like Halton Women’s Place, which helps people escape abusive relationships.
“I feel really proud. We’ve come so far, and I’m happy to be part of this,” Emma said. “Fifty or 60 years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to do this as a young woman.”
Emma will take part in Milton’s International Women’s Day march, happening this Thursday. Organized by the local chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), the event starts at 10 a.m. at Hugh Foster Hall (beside Milton Town Hall). Participants will march along Main Street, and everyone is welcome to join.
The march celebrates women’s achievements and reminds people that there is still work to do for gender equality.
“There are still unfair systems in place that hold women back,” said CFUW member Marina Huissoon. “Women’s rights continue to be a struggle.”
International Women’s Day events bring women together to recognize both their challenges and their successes.
Last June, the Canadian Association of Feminist Parliamentarians, led by Senator Marilou McPhedran, introduced a pledge for respectful behavior in government workplaces after reports of workplace toxicity.
For CFUW member Elaine Reid, this was a reminder of how difficult it was for women in the past. “When I started working, I had to stay quiet,” she said. “You just worked harder and put up with inappropriate comments.”
Another CFUW member, Linda Hunter, agreed. “When I worked in male-dominated fields, I didn’t know who to talk to about harassment,” she said.
The upcoming march in Milton is a chance to honor the progress made and keep pushing for a better future.
