Milton Council Approves 9.89% Local Tax Hike Amid Concerns Over Growing Bureaucracy

Updated: Dec 4

Milton homeowners will see their property taxes rise by 9.89% for the local portion of taxes, following a council vote on December 2. This marks the third year in a row that local tax increases have exceeded inflation. For the average household, this means an additional $49.87 for every $100,000 of their property’s assessed value.

The decision was controversial. Mayor Gord Krantz and Ward 2 Councillor John Challoner voted against the budget, citing concerns about its impact on residents. Krantz criticized the council’s trend of annual tax hikes, predicting a 40% total increase by the end of the term. He challenged fellow councillors to include the tax increases in their future election campaigns.

Supporters of the budget argued it invests in crucial areas like transit, fire services, road improvements, and community safety. The 2025 capital budget includes $139.5 million for 138 projects, while the operating budget of $222.3 million will fund daily services like snow clearing, road maintenance, and parks.

Despite opposing the budget, Krantz signed it, stating, “We grew bureaucracy a little larger tonight.” However, he emphasized that Milton still has one of the lowest tax rates among neighboring municipalities.

Public input on the budget highlighted requests for fire services and recreation facilities, including a demand for more pickleball courts. Councilor Colin Best defended the budget, noting it addresses residents’ needs while supporting growth.

Councilor. Challoner opposed the budget, arguing for a tax increase closer to the inflation rate by cutting $2.5 million in discretionary spending. The final tax rate, including Halton Region’s portion, will be confirmed after a December 11 vote.
