A Milton councillor wants to turn the town’s police station into affordable housing after the police move to a new location next year.
With more funding for housing projects in Burlington and Oakville, Councillor Sameera Ali is asking regional staff to consider similar options for Milton.
“What about Milton?” Ali asked during a regional council meeting.
Halton Region is receiving over $500,000 for four modular shelter units in Burlington and more than $3 million to build 52 assisted housing units in Oakville.
Ali pointed out that the demand for affordable housing in Milton is high, with over 8,000 people on the region’s waitlist. While a housing project is planned at Allendale, it depends on federal and provincial funding, making its future uncertain.
Ali suggested using other regional land, like the current 1 District police station, for housing. The new police station in Hornby, set to open in 2026, will replace both the Milton and Georgetown locations.
She noted that the existing police station on Childs Drive is already set up with utilities and security, making it a good option for housing instead of police training.
"Why not use this regional facility for something that is much needed?" Ali asked.
She also highlighted that Milton has the highest number of intimate partner violence calls in Halton, creating an urgent need for safe housing.
Regional staff said they are open to exploring possibilities but noted that the police station is currently designated for police and paramedic services.
Ali, who is also on the Halton Police Board, said she will keep pushing the discussion forward.
