Nearly 20 years after Milton first proposed building a local college or university, real progress is happening as Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) prepares for a permanent campus in the Milton Education Village (MEV).
Heidi Northwood, WLU’s provost and vice president of academics, highlighted the work done since the university got provincial approval in June 2021. This led to the opening of the interim Milton Academic Centre on Sept. 5, 2023, where about 90 students are now studying computer science and psychology.
Work has already begun on the future MEV campus, including site preparation and stormwater management, according to Jason Coolman, WLU’s vice president of advancement. The MEV covers 400 acres near the Mattamy National Cycling Centre and will also be home to Conestoga College and a long-term care facility, which has already started construction.
The Town of Milton plans for the area to become a mixed-use community with room for 22,000 people and jobs by 2051, featuring a "main street" village center, homes, schools, parks, and retail spaces.
Mayor Gord Krantz reflected on the project's long journey, saying, "Anything worthwhile takes time, and we've done it right here."
Renderings of the campus show modern buildings, good transit access, and outdoor spaces for environmental projects. Laurier plans to launch a business technology management program in 2025, followed by software engineering in 2026, aiming to grow the student body to 2,500 in the coming years.
