Overnight parking has been a ongoing problem in Milton.
During the Town Council meeting on Monday, October 7th, a new pilot program was approved that could change how residents park at night.
The Transitional Neighborhood Parking Strategy, proposed by Regional Councillor Sameera Ali and supported by Councillor Colin Best, is a one-year permit parking program. It will allow residents to park in certain municipal parks instead of on the street. The program will cost $60 a month, including taxes, which will help cover expenses like software, extra services, signage, admin fees, and potential revenue loss. This price is similar to what nearby municipalities charge for similar programs.
Town staff recommended providing 400 parking permit spaces, with at least 100 spaces in each of Milton’s four Wards. Vehicles will need to be moved by 8:00 a.m. each day, but this time may change once the program starts.
Here are the current Milton parks suggested for the pilot program:
Councillor Ali expressed her satisfaction with the creative approach to local parking but raised concerns about the logistics at several planned locations.
Kristine Scott, Commissioner of Corporate Services for the Town of Milton, stated that, since this is a pilot program, staff are trying to avoid any unintended problems, especially near local schools. The goal is to see what works and make improvements to the program.
Safety issues, such as vehicle theft, were also discussed. Councillor Ali shared comments from Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner, who mentioned the need for better lighting in all parking lots and possibly security cameras. Staff will consider these suggestions as they finalize the proposal.
This strategy was proposed as a necessary step for "Planned Community Growth" in the Town's 2023-2027 Strategic Plan. It is set to start on January 1st, 2025, but the Town believes it may launch in the spring. After the one-year period, staff will report back to the Council with any recommendations.
More updates are expected later this year with the Milton Town-Wide Transportation Master Plan Update.
