"Milton Legion Launches Inaugural Banner Campaign to Honor Local Veterans"

Milton’s dedication to its veterans will be proudly shown this fall.

As Remembrance Day nears, about 40 banners honoring local veterans will soon be displayed on lamp posts at Victoria Park and along Main Street downtown.

The new "Legacy of Honour" campaign, inspired by similar programs in southern Ontario, was launched with a special event at the Royal Canadian Legion (Joe Waters) Branch 136 on Saturday night.

Over 100 Legion members and supporters attended, including the grandchildren of Joe Waters, a Second World War veteran and well-known bugler for whom the local Legion is named.

Jim Gibbons and Susan Waters Devaan made the evening even more special by donating the family's trumpet and cornet. These instruments have been played by three generations at many Remembrance Day services and veterans' events.

“This means everything to me,” said Frank Avila, chair of the Legacy of Honour campaign. Coming from a military family, he feels a strong connection to honoring the town's veterans.

Avila, along with RCL Branch 136 President Sarah Moore, thanked the campaign team and the sponsors who helped make the banner campaign possible.

Moore added, “The support was fantastic.”

The evening also featured a performance by local music group That Band, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall.
