Milton Man Convicted in Illegal Moose Hunting Investigation

Five individuals, including a Milton resident, have been convicted following a multi-year investigation into illegal moose hunting in northwestern Ontario. The probe, conducted by conservation officers and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Intelligence and Investigations Services, focused on hunting activities between 2020 and 2022 in a remote area north of Pickle Lake.

Paul Markewycz of Mississauga was fined $20,000 and handed a three-year hunting license suspension for unlawfully discharging a firearm from a motorboat at a bull moose on the Otoskwin River. His prior record of big-game hunting violations factored into the penalty.

Other convictions include:

  • Miroslaw Markewycz (Mississauga): Fined $2,000 and given a two-year hunting license suspension for unlawfully invalidating a tag for an illegally harvested moose.

  • Piotr Markewycz (Mississauga): Fined $6,000 and issued a one-year hunting license suspension for knowingly providing false information to conservation officers.

  • Vitaliy Shevchenko (Mississauga): Fined $5,000 and received a one-year hunting license suspension for knowingly making a false statement to conservation officers.

  • Michael LaManna (Milton): Fined $4,000 and his hunting license suspended for a year for knowingly making a false statement to conservation officers.

The case was heard virtually by Justice Nancy Tulloch at the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on December 2.

This investigation highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and the enforcement of hunting regulations in Ontario.
