Félix Lopes, 67, has been living in his vehicle for over two years and remains calm about the cold, snowy winter ahead. Parked in a Milton shopping plaza since October 2022, Lopes says the dropping temperatures don’t worry him too much.
During the day, he finds warmth in nearby fast-food restaurants. At night, he bundles up in his vehicle and only uses the engine’s heating system when temperatures get dangerously low. As an environmentally conscious individual, Lopes says he avoids running the engine unnecessarily, describing himself as a “green freak.”
On the day of his interview, Environment Canada reported a frigid -6°C with a -16°C wind chill. Despite this, Lopes shared that his biggest struggle isn’t the cold—it’s the lack of a proper indoor space to cook the meals he loves.
“Right now? I’m super OK,” said Lopes. “But I’m suffering from poor nutrition and missing the food I learned to cook. Psychologically, that’s the hardest part.”
Earlier this year, in June, Lopes was hopeful about moving to Sault Ste. Marie after saving a significant amount of money from his pension. Unfortunately, those plans didn’t work out, but he remains optimistic about finding a permanent home and moving away from the plaza.
