Milton Parents Raise Concerns Over School-Area Roundabout Safety.

Updated: Nov 7

As the new school year begins, safety concerns have heightened, especially in Ward 3, where two teens were hit by cars at the Louis St. Laurent Avenue and Kennedy Circle roundabout on their way to school. Fortunately, neither teen was seriously injured, but the accidents have worried parents. With three schools in the area, including the newly opened St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Secondary School, pedestrian traffic has increased significantly.

Motorists are reminded to follow key roundabout rules: stop for pedestrians, use the correct lane, and signal when exiting. Ward 3 Councilor Adil Khalqi recently pushed for the installation of a speed bump at the roundabout, and the town has added Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at pedestrian crossings to improve safety.

Parents, like Rod McLachlan, have voiced concerns, with some preferring traditional intersections near schools. McLachlan also highlights how other communities, such as Cambridge, are considering pedestrian tunnels to improve safety, a solution already embraced by many European cities.

With numerous roundabouts across both urban Milton and its outskirts – many installed in the last few years – motorists are reminded to follow these four basic rules.

  • Watch and stop for pedestrians

  • To turn left or go straight, use the left lane

  • To turn right or go straight, use the right lane

  • Signal as you exit the roundabout

  • For more information or to share concerns, visit the Town’s website or contact Khalqi at adil.khalqi@milton.ca or 905-878-7252, ext. 2398.
