Milton’s Infant Food Bank Aims to Keep Kids Nourished This Holiday Season.

The holiday season is a time of magic, but it can also be financially overwhelming, especially for families facing rising costs. To help alleviate the burden, the Milton Community Resource Centre (MCRC) is hosting its eighth annual Fill A Crib campaign, aiming to provide essential supplies to families in need through its infant food bank.

Becky Andrade, MCRC’s executive director, highlighted the pressing demand for this initiative.

“Currently, we’re serving an average of 170 families per month who rely on our infant food bank for a month’s worth of essential supplies. This year, our goal is to fill 100 cribs, which equals $50,000. That’s what we need to sustain those families for six months,” Andrade explained.

The campaign, which began in 2017, focuses on supporting vulnerable, at-risk, and low-income families by collecting items such as diapers, baby food, and formula. Running until January 15, the initiative comes at a time when the need has grown significantly, with a 55% increase in demand since 2020.

Jessica Rankin, director of early years child and family services at MCRC, emphasized the strain many families are experiencing.

“With inflation and skyrocketing costs, everyone is feeling the pinch. For families already struggling, this added financial pressure can make it even harder to provide for their babies. Campaigns like Fill A Crib ensure families receive essential items like baby food and diapers, easing some of their stress,” Rankin said.

The campaign has grown alongside community needs. In its first year, the goal was to fill just 10 cribs. Today, the ambitious target of 100 cribs reflects both the increased demand and the unwavering support from the Milton community.

Local organizations, residents, and leaders have played a crucial role in the campaign’s success. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz commended MCRC’s efforts, recognizing the importance of such initiatives.

“While Milton and the Halton region are relatively affluent, there are still individuals and families in need. Organizations like the MCRC step up to support these individuals, particularly youth, who often need the most help,” said Krantz.

The Fill A Crib campaign continues to provide a lifeline for struggling families, demonstrating the power of community compassion during the holiday season
