The Town of Milton continues to experience rapid population growth, according to newly released data from Statistics Canada. The agency’s latest population estimates, published on January 16, reveal steady and significant increases in Milton’s population.
As of 2024, Milton's population reached 152,817 — an increase of 4,701 residents compared to 2023. Over the past four years, the town has welcomed 17,688 new residents, marking a 13.09% increase since 2020.
This surge far surpasses the growth rates of neighboring municipalities. Oakville’s population grew by 8.99% over the same period, while Burlington saw a modest increase of 1.08%. Even when compared to Ontario’s overall population growth of 9.23% since 2020, Milton's growth stands out as one of the most dynamic in the region.
Long-Term Growth Projections Milton’s rapid expansion shows no signs of slowing. According to a study presented to the Town Council in June 2024 by Watson & Associates Economists Ltd., Milton’s population is expected to more than double over the next 25 years.
“We’re projecting the town to grow to a population of 400,400 people by 2051. This represents an increase of 263,000 people, or roughly 9,000 people per year over the next 30 years. So, it’s a significant amount of growth,” said Jamie Cook, who prepared the report.
Key Drivers of Growth Statistics Canada attributes much of this growth to international migration, which remains the primary driver of population increases across Canada. The report highlights that new immigrants are primarily settling in large urban centers and their surrounding areas, fueling almost all of the growth in these regions.
Milton’s appeal as a growing community, coupled with its strategic location near Toronto and access to amenities, continues to attract both newcomers to Canada and residents from across Ontario.
With its population booming and long-term projections indicating even more growth ahead, Milton is poised to play an increasingly prominent role in the Greater Toronto Area’s economic and cultural landscape.
