Cyclists will have to share Bergamot Avenue with parked cars from late fall to early spring.
On February 24, Milton council approved a change that allows on-street parking in the bike lanes on Bergamot Avenue from November 15 to April 15.
Ward 4 Councilor Sameera Ali explained that the decision is a compromise between keeping bike lanes and providing more parking for residents.
“We want to balance both needs—allowing on-street parking while still maintaining a bike-friendly community,” said Ali.
Why Bergamot Avenue?
Bergamot Avenue is different from most streets in Milton because it has bike lanes on both sides but no dedicated parking spaces. Town officials say very few roads in Milton have this layout, and they don’t plan to make similar changes elsewhere.
The street is near the future Milton Education Village (MEV), a 400-acre development that will eventually house 12,000 residents, 5,000 jobs, and 15,000 students. Ali pointed out that Bergamot’s bike lanes were designed to connect with MEV, but since the project isn’t finished yet, the town decided to offer temporary parking relief for residents.
Parking Rules Stay the Same
Even with this change, regular parking rules will still apply:✔ Maximum parking time: 5 hours⛔ No parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
This seasonal adjustment aims to help residents while the community continues to grow.
