Milton is making a significant investment in its transit system with the launch of a five-year, $50-million service plan, supported by the recently approved 2025 budget. The plan includes several key initiatives aimed at improving the town's public transportation services:
Extended service hours
New Sunday service
Purchase of seven new buses
A program to fully subsidize transit tickets for eligible riders
A Growing Transit System
Tony D’Alessandro, Director of Transit Services, highlighted the rising demand for Milton Transit.
“Throughout 2024, we’ve seen a steady increase in ridership, surpassing one million riders for the first time. With the town council’s continued support, Milton Transit is moving closer to the 2051 vision of offering a safe, accessible, and reliable transit system that meets the needs of all residents and visitors,” he said.
The Five-Year Plan
This 2025 investment is part of Milton’s five-year service plan and master plan update, which was approved by council in June. By 2029, the plan aims to deliver:
More direct routes
Late-night services
Expanded coverage
Integration with the Presto fare system
Regular Sunday service
Diverse Opinions on the Investment
Not everyone is on board with the increased spending. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Rick Malboeuf expressed concerns during budget discussions.
“The budget expands service hours into the evenings and Sundays, which I don’t think makes sense. Transit use is already low during the week. Why should we expect people to use it on Sundays or at night? This will only increase costs and add pollution to our streets,” said Malboeuf.
Despite these concerns, the council remains focused on enhancing transit to meet Milton’s future needs.
