The Masters Tape Ball Cricket League has joined Milton’s growing cricket community, bringing the "gentleman's game" to the town in a new and accessible format.
To kick off their league, organizers and cricket enthusiasts Kazz Khan and Sunny Khan have launched an exciting winter tournament at the Indoor Turf Centre. With 14 teams competing for the title of league champions, the tournament has already energized local cricket fans since its debut on October 20.
Teams have been outfitted with uniforms, sponsors have stepped in to support the league, and a shiny league trophy is up for grabs. The Khans designed the league to be inclusive, choosing tape ball cricket for its lower barriers to entry compared to traditional hardball cricket. This version of the game requires less protective gear and is easier for beginners, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
“Cricket is often limited to the summer months, but we wanted to give the community an opportunity to enjoy cricket year-round,” said Kazz Khan. “This league isn’t about financial gain or big prize money. It’s about creating a fun winter activity for everyone.”
A Community-Focused Event The winter tournament is billed as a family-friendly event where anyone can join in the fun. “It’s an open invitation for everyone,” said Khan. “Bring your families, enjoy the games, and celebrate the love of cricket.”
Teams from across the region, including GTA Godzillas, Toronto Reindeer, Signature XI, and OCC Cousins ‘N Neighbours, compeing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The tournament runs until February, with a short break before the Rte every Sunday eveamzan Tournament kicks off in early spring.
Adding to the excitement, a special Canada vs. U.S. match will take place in late January, featuring Chicago’s CASO Cricket Club, marking a highlight of the tournament.
Cricket’s Rapid Growth in Milton Cricket’s surging popularity in Milton has spurred other leagues, such as the Markhor Cricket Club and Yukti Cricket League, to welcome new players. This growing enthusiasm has caught the attention of local officials, who are advocating for expanded cricket facilities.
Ward 3 Councillor Adil Khalqi recently visited the Masters league and highlighted plans for upcoming recreational developments. Proposed projects include cricket batting cages at Optimist Park and the integration of cricket amenities into a new community center and district park near Bronte Road and Ethridge Avenue, pending 2025 budget discussions.
“In addition to cricket, we’re seeing rising demand for sports like pickleball, badminton, and tennis,” Khalqi said, encouraging residents to participate in the budgeting process and share feedback with the Town.
As Milton continues to embrace cricket’s growing presence, the Masters Tape Ball Cricket League and its winter tournament stand as a testament to the town’s love for the game and its commitment to fostering community engagement.
