A new, immersive art exhibit is set to open at Conservation Halton’s Deer Clan Longhouse gallery in Crawford Lake Conservation Area. Featuring the works of renowned Tuscarora artist Raymond R. Skye, the exhibit, titled The Three Sisters, invites visitors to explore the historical and cultural significance of agriculture in Longhouse societies through a blend of art, storytelling, and education.
Skye’s work, deeply rooted in Tuscarora cultural teachings, brings the legacy of indigenous agriculture to life. “Much of my artwork reflects my cultural teachings,” Skye shares. “I believe those teachings continue to guide me and help me portray my culture with authenticity and dignity. Visuals play a vital role in the learning process, enabling viewers to better understand the story behind the imagery. My ability to create such visuals allows me to enhance the history I want to portray.”
The exhibit, set in the modern gallery space of the reconstructed 15th-century Longhouse Village, delves into the connection between people and the land, highlighting corn, beans, and squash, traditionally known as the “Three Sisters.” Through Skye's art, visitors will gain insight into the symbiotic relationship between these crops and their crucial role in sustaining indigenous communities.
Join the opening event on Saturday, November 9th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to meet the artist and gain a deeper understanding of his work and the exhibit’s message. Skye will be present to discuss his pieces and his unique approach to cultural storytelling through visual art.
The exhibit will run on weekends and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., through February 23, 2025, at Crawford Lake Conservation Area, located at 3115 Conservation Road, Milton.
