Rise in Single-Mother Families: A Changing Trend in Milton

A recent report provides new insights into single-mother families in Halton.

Community Development Halton, a non-profit organization that researches community issues, released a report in December 2024 called “Community Data Watch — Single Mother Families.” It looks at the lives of single mothers in Halton, their challenges, and their family situations.

Big Increase in Milton

Milton has seen the biggest rise in single-mother families in Halton. Between 2001 and 2021, the number of these families grew by almost 290%.

Most Single Moms Are in Their 40s and 50s

The report found that most single mothers in Halton are between 40 and 54 years old. This is likely due to higher divorce and separation rates. Teenage single moms are very rare, making up less than 1% of all single mothers in the region.

Lower Income Levels

Single mothers in Halton are more likely to have lower incomes than single fathers. Many single parents, both mothers and fathers, earn between $10,000 and $29,999 per year.

A Growing Trend Across Ontario

This is not just happening in Halton. Across Ontario, 13.6% of all families in 2021 were led by single mothers, and their numbers have grown 34% over the past 20 years.

The report is based on data from Statistics Canada and aims to help people better understand the struggles of single-mother families.
