"The Story Behind Milton’s Basswood Crescent and Violet Gate"

Updated: Nov 7

We’re continuing with our theme of nature-inspired street names this fall.

Each week, we talk to John Challinor II, President of the Milton Historical Society, to learn more about the names behind our roads. In case you didn’t know, he co-wrote a book on Milton street names with the late historian Jim Dills called Milton Streets, published in 2007.

Recently, we explored Ash Gate and Walnut Landing, and this week, we’re focusing on Basswood Crescent and Violet Gate.

Starting with Basswood Crescent, Challinor explains that the name comes from a strong tree. You can find basswood trees in rural areas around Milton. With a lifespan of over 200 years, some basswoods might have been planted when Milton was first founded and are still standing today.

Next, we have Violet Gate, named after the flower.

If you’re curious about how Milton’s streets got their names, you can check out Milton Streets at the Milton Public Library. The book sold out quickly after its release and hasn’t been reprinted since, but an updated version may come in the future as Milton has grown a lot since its original publication.
