Two baseball diamonds at the Milton Community Sports Park, currently labeled simply as "Milton Community Park #1" and "Milton Community Park #2," are set to receive new names. Situated next to the Milton Sports Centre on Santa Maria Boulevard, the fields have been proposed for renaming to honor long-time Milton residents who played key roles in the local baseball community.
The proposal, introduced by Milton Ward 2 Councillor John Challinor and supported by Milton Regional Councillor for Ward 1 Colin Best, suggests naming Milton Community Park #1 after Peter McMullen and Milton Community Park #2 after Glenn Turner. Both men left significant legacies in Milton’s baseball history:
Peter McMullen: Known for his dedication to minor baseball in Milton, McMullen served as President of both the Ontario Baseball Association and the Halton County Baseball Association. His work helped develop youth baseball programs in the town.
Glenn Turner: A lifelong Miltonian, Turner revitalized the Milton Red Sox Baseball Club, maintained the town’s premier baseball diamond for over three decades, managed Milton’s leading inter-county baseball team for 37 years, and played an integral role in designing top baseball facilities in Milton.
At the March 4th Town Council meeting, Councillor Challinor noted the rarity of this type of naming proposal in Milton, with the last instance being the naming of the John Tonelli Sports Centre. While the Tonelli Centre is a major facility, these are considered minor facilities, and this would be Milton’s first community-driven renaming for sports fields without a sponsorship naming component.
The motion passed in council, and the proposal will now be opened to public debate before a final decision is made. Town staff will proceed with the renaming process under Policy 69: "Naming and Re-Naming Municipal Facilities."
