Warm November Weather Doesn’t Stop Town of Halton Hills from Preparing for Snow.

Halton Hills Gears Up for Winter Weather with Comprehensive Preparation Plan

As winter approaches, the Town of Halton Hills is taking proactive steps to ensure roads, sidewalks, and public spaces remain safe and accessible throughout the season. Staff are hard at work preparing snow removal equipment, training crews, and stockpiling salt and sand to tackle the challenges of icy conditions and snowfall.

Mayor Ann Lawlor commended the team for their dedication: “When the snow falls, our staff work long hours to keep roads safe and clear quickly. We also encourage residents to lend a hand by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their homes. This small effort helps children get to school safely and supports neighbors who are out walking.”

Winter Control Program

Bill Andrews, Commissioner of Transportation and Public Works, emphasized the importance of safety in their operations:“We are well-prepared for inclement weather with a robust Winter Control Program. Our team manages over 1,100 kilometers of roads, 160 kilometers of sidewalks, and 27 municipal parking lots. During major snowfalls, we prioritize clearing Regional roads such as Trafalgar Road and Regional Road 25, followed by arterial roads like Queen Street and Guelph Street, then collector roads like Delrex Blvd. and Churchill Road S., and finally local urban and rural roads.”

Important Guidelines for Residents

To ensure smooth operations and community safety, residents are reminded of the following:

  • Heavy Snowfall Delays: Successive storms or heavy snowfall may extend the time needed to reach local roads.

  • Parking Prohibition: A Town-wide ban on street parking is in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. (November 15 to April 15) to facilitate nighttime snow clearing.

  • Sidewalk Clearing: Town-maintained sidewalks will be cleared within 48 hours after snowfall ends.

  • Assist Where Possible: Residents are encouraged to clear snow from fire hydrants, non-Town-maintained sidewalks, and to assist neighbors who may have difficulty with snow removal.

  • Bylaw Compliance:

    • Do not shovel snow onto roadways, per By-Law #90-68.

    • Keep garbage bins and blue boxes off the road.

    • Basketball nets must not be placed on the road or roadside, per By-Law 2019-0008. Report violations to Enforcement Services at 905-873-2601 ext. 2330.

The Town’s collaborative effort between staff and residents aims to minimize disruptions and keep the community moving safely during winter. For updates and more information on snow clearing operations, visit the Town of Halton Hills website.
