Why the Federal Government is Investing Millions in the Bruce Trail in Milton and Beyond?

Government officials visited Milton to take a hike and announce a major investment.

On November 13, Milton MP Adam van Koeverden and Burlington MP Karina Gould visited the Milton section of the Bruce Trail, where they announced an additional $2.4 million in funding for the Bruce Trail Conservancy. This funding will help protect more land along the Niagara Escarpment and support conservation efforts.

Michael McDonald, CEO of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, explained how this investment benefits both people and the environment.

“The Bruce Trail is like a ribbon of wilderness, connecting people with nature while protecting habitats for hundreds of rare species along the Niagara Escarpment. Every effort to preserve near-urban nature helps fight climate change and protect biodiversity for future generations,” said McDonald.

This new funding adds to the $5 million the Conservancy received in 2022 through the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund.

Burlington MP Karina Gould highlighted how projects like this also boost the local economy.

“When people visit to hike, they often stop for lunch, grab a coffee, or buy a souvenir. Supporting nature projects helps our environment, our community, and our economy,” said Gould.

The Bruce Trail is Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath, stretching over 900 kilometers with 450 kilometers of side trails. It runs through many communities, including Milton, and is popular for hiking, running, birdwatching, skiing, and snowshoeing.

Milton MP Adam van Koeverden added that these investments also improve public health and save costs.

“When people are more active and connected to nature, they tend to visit doctors less and rely less on medication. Being active outdoors improves Canada’s health and supports our economy,” said van Koeverden.
